The LECo partners had their third partner meeting on the Aran Islands from June 19-20. On the morning of the first day there was a very interesting community energy study trip that was hosted by Avril Sharkey from the local energy co-operative “Fuinneamh Comharchumann Fuinnimh Oileáin Árann Teoranta (www.aranislandsenergycoop.ie/)”. The morning visit included a cycle trip around the south of the island and incorporated the following sites of community energy interest: there is a proposal for an installation of 2 x 900kW community owned wind turbines in addition to 1MW of solar PV on Inis Mor, this is in line with their vision of energy independence by 2022; we then had a coffee break in the lodge (www.aislingarann.ie/) which is a large centre on the island that has had several energy retrofits and upgrades including 4kW PV, external insulation, battery storage and heat pumps. Avril introduced us to the workings of the energy co-op in relation to housing upgrades and EU project participation. Project meetings then took place throughout Monday afternoon and Tuesday.
